Flowers of Salzburg: A Guide to the Region’s Floral Seasons
Spring in Salzburg is a sensory explosion. From the manicured parterres of Mirabell Gardens to the wild Alpine meadows of the Gaisberg or Untersberg, the region transforms into a vibrant canvas. Over years of conducting private tours and exploring with my camera, I have curated this collection of local flora to help you plan your visit according to nature's calendar.

Early Spring & Awakening (March – April)
The season begins with resilient blooms that often peak through the last of the snow. In our gardens and forests, you will find:
- The Classics: Resilient Christmas Roses, Crocuses, Hyacinths, and vibrant Tulips.
- Wild Treasures: Hepatica (Liverleaf), White Butterbur, Dandelions (and their fluffy Blowball stage), and the cheerful March-marigold.
- Woodland Beauty: Delicate Forget-me-nots and the first Blue Bellflowers.
Alpine Summer & Meadows (May – August)
As the warmth moves to the higher elevations, the landscape changes. This is the time for intense colors and field crops:
- In the Fields: Vast stretches of Rye, where you can spot Red Poppies (Poppy in Ryefield), Daisies, and the bright yellow Kidneyvetch (Woundwort).
- The High Alps: This is the kingdom of the Rhododendron (Alpenrose), the legendary Gentian (including the Field Gentian), and the rare Earleaf Bellflower.
- Mountain Meadows: Look for the golden Globeflowers, more Daisies & Dandelions, and various types of Bellflowers.
Late Season & Autumn (September – October)
As the year winds down, the floral intensity shifts to the trees and late-blooming mountain plants:
- Golden Tones: The spectacular transformation of Autumn leaves across the Salzburg valley.
- Resilient Blooms: Late-season varieties that hold their color until the first frost.
