Munich to Salzburg by Train – Discover Salzburg with a Local Guide
If you're planning a trip to Munich and would like to visit Salzburg for a day or two, I offer private transfer services in an 8-seat minivan from both Munich city and Munich Airport to Salzburg and back. This is a convenient and comfortable option, especially for small groups or families.
However, if you're looking for a more budget-friendly way to travel, taking the train is an excellent alternative. Salzburg is located approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Munich city and around 180 kilometers (112 miles) from Munich Airport.
For train travel within Bavaria, I recommend the Bayern Ticket. It’s a great value, allowing unlimited travel on regional trains and all public transportation in Bavaria. The ticket is valid from 9:00 AM to 3:00 AM on weekdays, and from midnight to midnight on weekends and public holidays. As of 2025, the Bayern Ticket costs €32 for the first passenger, with each additional traveler paying an extra €10. Children under 14 travel free when accompanied by a parent or close relative.
You can buy the Bayern Ticket at Munich Airport or train station ticket offices (an extra €2 service fee may apply), or purchase it without the fee via ticket machines or the Deutsche Bahn website (bahn.de).
From Munich Airport, the S8 express train departs every 20 minutes to Munich Central Station. If you're heading to Salzburg, get off at Munich Ostbahnhof (the second-to-last stop), where you can transfer to a direct regional train to Salzburg using the same Bayern Ticket. The total journey takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
If you're visiting Salzburg for just one day and want to make the most of your time, I offer guided tours starting right from the Salzburg railway station. Let me show you the highlights with the insight of a professional local guide.
