April in Salzburg: Spring Awakenings and Weather Tips
Each season in the Alps has its own charm, but for me, April in Salzburg embodies the perfect sense of anticipation for summer. As the snow slowly melts in the valleys, the air fills with a rich, fragrant scent of awakening nature.

What is the Weather Like in April?
While daytime highs can reach a balmy +20°C — inviting you to enjoy a leisurely coffee on a sunny terrace — April in Austria is famous for its unpredictable “four seasons in one day” nature. There’s a local saying: “April macht, was er will!” (April does what it wants). Just when you feel ready to pack away your winter gear, a sudden frost or a fleeting snow shower might remind you of the nearby Alps. It’s a month of vivid contrasts and brilliant colors, offering a stunning natural backdrop for professional photography and unforgettable spring walks.
Spring Symphony in Salzburg
In Hellbrunn Gardens, sunny meadows come alive with a delicate carpet of crocuses and daffodils. Meanwhile, the Mirabell Gardens showcase resilient pansies from late autumn, soon to be joined by the star of the season: the magnificent magnolias at Makart Square. As April progresses, the city softens with the pink haze of Sakura blossoms around Mirabell Square and throughout the residential gardens.
The landscape transforms rapidly; green fields soon turn into a vibrant, sun-drenched sea of yellow dandelions. Even the humble apple trees take on an ethereal quality, blooming so densely they resemble exotic trees from a distant land.
Activities and Hiking
April is a fantastic month for those who prefer active recreation without the summer crowds:
- Hiking: You can enjoy your first hike in the lower hills and valleys. However, the deep snow in the higher mountains often lasts until late May, so the official high-altitude hiking season usually starts in the first week of June.
- Biking: It is an excellent month for long-distance cycling along the Salzach river or toward the Lake District. Highly recommend the route Salzburg - Mondsee.
- Vibe: It’s a month of high energy. If you enjoy "active solitude" and want to avoid the peak tourist season, April is my top recommendation.
Pro Tip: Pack layers! A light waterproof jacket and a warm sweater are essentials for April's mood swings in the North Alpine area.
