Obauer - Gourmet restaurant in the suburbs of Salzburg

I believe that we travel the world not only for visual experiences but also for unique gastronomic encounters. Salzburg and its surroundings have several restaurants where fine cuisine enthusiasts go, considering sightseeing as a secondary goal. One of these establishments is situated in the town of Werfen, which is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) away from Salzburg.

Obauer - a gourmet restaurant in the suburbs of Salzburg

The Obauer restaurant is named after the Obauer brothers who are the chefs. While most travelers visit Werfen to explore the enormous caves covered in centuries-old ice and climb up to the ancient fortress of Hohenwerfen, there are also those who do not need any caves and castles, because Werfen is home to one of the best restaurants in Europe!

The brothers Rudolf and Karl Obauer were born in the village of Werfen in the family of a famous Austrian restaurateur. After receiving culinary education in Salzburg, since 1979, they have taken up the gastronomic business professionally, having worked for 15 years in famous restaurants in Austria, France, and Belgium. After years of working abroad, the brothers returned to their native village of Werfen, where they opened their own restaurant, hotel, butcher shop and delicatessen store.

In 1996, the restaurant Obauer received two Michelin Guide stars at once, which happens extremely rarely. Commonly, stars are awarded one by one.

The Oubauer restaurant received 98.50 points out of 100 in the top 1000 best restaurants in the world according to the La Liste catalog 2024.

In 2023, the restaurant received a rating of 5 hoods and 19 points out of 20 from the haute cuisine guide Gault&Millau.

In 2023, Falstaff, a magazine about elite cuisine and wines, awarded the Obauer brothers 2nd place as the best chefs in Austria. Out of 100 possible points, the Obauer restaurant received 99 for service, dishes, wine selection and atmosphere.

I can plan a tour itinerary for you that includes a lunch or dinner at the Obauer Restaurant!

FAQ
How can I book your tour?
Please send your inquiry via email or use the contact form with the following details: tour date, tour name, number of participants, and meeting point. I will respond with accurate information and pricing.
How much does your service cost?
The estimated prices are: Salzburg Walking Tours cost 180 - 300 Euro, half day tours in Salzburg and the suburbs in my minibus 350 - 450 Euro, and full day tours 650 - 850 Euro, depending on distance and program.
How many people can fit in your minivan? Can our baby sit on our lap?
My minivan can accommodate up to eight people. Children may not sit on a parent's lap. Child boosters are available at no additional charge.
What does your service cover?
Qualified guide service in Salzburg (Professional Austria Guide since 2006). Customized tour planning based on your preferences. Travel in a Volkswagen Caravelle T6 minivan with room for up to eight passengers. There are no additional charges for tolls or parking.
What is not included in your tours?
Entrance fees, accommodations, meals and drinks.
What are the payment methods?
I accept payments via bank transfers, PayPal (with a commission), credit cards, and cash. Please be aware that using a credit card will result in a 3% fee.
Can we hire you to be just a driver for us?
Yes, but it does not affect the price. I am a licensed tour guide with extensive knowledge and high qualifications. Therefore, my time costs more than the time of a taxi driver.
We drive our own car. Can we hire you as a guide only?
Yes, you can, but I wouldn't recommend it. When I drive my van, I know where to go, where to slow down, where to stop, and I can explain without having to focus on showing the way. Plus, my van is roomy with great visibility from the sedan. The price does not make a big difference either.
If we are just a few people and don't need a minivan, can you give us a tour in a smaller car for a lower price?
I am self-employed and have one minivan. I can't provide the tour in a smaller car.
There are more than eight of us. Can you help us book a bigger bus?
Due to the amount of information required by bus companies to calculate costs and require a deposit, organizing a large coach is a time-consuming process. Therefore, I prefer to refrain from booking tourist buses. However, I can provide information about transportation companies or organize a second minivan with a professional guide.
Can we hire you for a few days?
Yes, I offer multi-day itineraries too.
Can you give us a tour of just the town of Hallstatt?
No. I don't offer tours, just of Hallstatt. I offer full-day tours from Salzburg to the lake district, including Hallstatt, or full-day tours focusing on the Hallstatt region.
Can you give us a half-day tour from Salzburg to Hallstatt?
Yes, I can. But remember that a half day is 4 hours. The way from Salzburg to Hallstatt and back takes 3 hours. Would you be happy to spend 3 hours in the car for only 1 hour in the place you want to go? Hallstatt is one of many picturesque towns in the Salzkammergut Lake District. Instead of fixating on Hallstatt, I suggest you add other beautiful towns and lakes where you can discover the real Austria and not just the touristic side of it.
Can we join a group tour with you?
No, I don't group individual travelers. As a one-person company, it's not possible.
Could you be our photographer on tour in Salzburg?
Yes, I enjoy photography and offer my services as a guide and photographer for an additional fee. I use my professional camera.
