By train from Munich (München) to Salzburg for a sightseeing tour

Salzburg - Munich (München) transfer - By railway to Salzburg

If you're planning a trip to Munich and want to visit Salzburg for a day or two, I can offer you my transfer service by an eight-seat minivan from Munich city or the Munich airport to Salzburg and back. However, taking the train is a great option if you're looking for a more economical way to get to Salzburg. Salzburg is 150 kilometers (80 miles) from Munich city and 180 kilometers (100 miles) from the Munich airport.

If you decide to use the railway, I recommend the Bayern Ticket for traveling by train in Bavaria. It's valid for all public transportation in Bavaria on weekdays from 9 am to 3 am and on weekends and holidays from midnight to midnight. You can purchase the Bayern Ticket at the airport or train station ticket offices for the price of 27 EUR (Tarif 2023) + 2 EUR for the service fee, or without the service fee on the Deutsche Bahn website BAHN.DE and from a ticket machine. 27 EUR is the basic price for the first passenger, and every next person pays 9 EUR more (Tarif 2023) if there are several travelers. Children under 14 can travel for free with accompanying parents or close relatives.

From the airport of Munich, the express train S8 runs to Munich Central Station every 20 minutes. If heading to Salzburg, get off at the penultimate station, Munich Ostbahnhof. Then, you can change to a direct train to Salzburg with the same Bayern Ticket. The travel time from Munich to Salzburg is 1 hour and 45 minutes.

If you're visiting Salzburg for only one day and want to make the best use of your time, I can offer you my services as a professional guide, starting from the railway station in Salzburg:

1. Salzburg walking tour - the best way to get first impressions of the city in a short time. Duration 2 - 2.5 hours.

2. Salzburg city tour with museums - to explore Salzburg in more detail, it's recommended to visit Mozart's birth house and take the funicular up to the Fortress Hohensalzburg. Duration 3.5 - 4 hours.

3. Salzburg city tour on foot and by car - besides the highlights of the Old Town, the tour will also allow you to see the most interesting sights outside the historical center. Duration 3.5 - 4 hours.

4. City tour of Salzburg + Lake District Salzkammergut - Full-day program. You'll have to arrive in Salzburg as early as possible to make the most of this tour.
