Public transport in Salzburg
There are two types of public transportation available in the city of Salzburg: buses and trolleybuses. The city does not have a subway or tram network. The unique numbers assigned to bus and trolleybus lines eliminate the need for travelers to inquire about the type of transportation they need to take, such as line No. 1, for example. A significant portion of the routes in the city are covered by trolleybuses, which extend beyond the city limits.Both types of transport offer a standard ticket, and all you need is a one-hour ticket to travel from one point to another, even if you need to change lines. Salzburg is a relatively small town, so it takes less than an hour to travel through it.
Public transport tickets in Salzburg are available from various sources, and their prices vary depending on where you buy them (as of 2024):
- Tickets purchased from the bus driver cost 3 euros for a single ticket and 6.40 euros for a 24-hour ticket.
- Tickets purchased from the ticket vending machine at the bus stop cost 2.30 euros for a single ticket and 4.70 euros for a 24-hour ticket.
- Tickets purchased from tobacco shops and ticket offices of city buses cost 2.30 euros for a single ticket and 4.70 euros for a 24-hour ticket. However, these tickets are sold only in blocks of five pieces.
If you buy a ticket from a ticket office or vending machine, you must validate it before boarding. Unfortunately, ticket inspections are frequent, and the penalty for traveling without a valid ticket is 85 euros!
For special events like the Music Festival, football games, ice hockey matches, or exhibitions at the Messezentrum, you don't need to buy a bus ticket if you have a booking three hours before the event's commencement. Children under the age of six can travel for free.
You can travel on all public transport for free by purchasing a tourist Salzburg Card. However, recording the date and time of first use with a pen before boarding is essential.
S-Bahn train lines connect Salzburg with the suburbs and nearby cities, including Freilassing and Berchtesgaden in Germany.
POSTBUS provides transportation to the suburbs, and travelers can refer to the schedule for more information. The central POSTBUS bus station is located at Salzburg's Hauptbahnhof train station.
The two most important transport hubs in Salzburg, where most urban transport lines intersect, are the Mirabellplatz and Ferdinand Hanusch Platz squares.
