Austria's Historic Salt Mine. Private Tour from Salzburg
If you're visiting Salzburg and wondering about the origin of the town's name, I recommend visiting one of the oldest salt mines in the world with me. The drive from Salzburg to the Salt Mine of Bad Dürrnberg takes around 45 minutes. Upon arrival, visitors are provided with special costumes to wear over their clothes. After that, the group is taken by a narrow-gauge railway to the old tunnels.
During the tour, visitors experience a range of activities, such as sliding down the tunnels and crossing an underground lake by ferry; in mini-cinemas, short movies are shown about the origin of salt in the Alps and how the archbishops made Salzburg one of the wealthiest principalities in Europe through the salt trade.
The underground tour lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes. The temperature inside the mine is +10 degrees Celcius throughout the year.
The Salt Mine Tour is a perfect mix of fun and education for adults and children. It can be perfectly combined with many other points of interest in that region, such as Eagle's Nest, Berchtesgaden, Königssee Lake, or other recommended places.
Children must be at least four years old to join the tour. Some of the tunnels are relatively narrow, and if you're claustrophobic or afraid of dark spaces, you should consider if it's worth going down there.
